Does probiotics beneficial for Coronary heart disease?
Published March 19,2024

Hi evergybody.Today the topic I want to share with all of you is “Does probiotics beneficial for Coronary heart disease?”I will share with you about mechanism of Probiotics on Coronary Heart Disease.

Supplementation of probiotics can regulate the microecology balance in the intestinal tract and induce the change of the cholesterol distribution mechanism in the human body, thereby effectively reducing the cholesterol content in human’s body. The probiotics can also effectively reduce blood pressure. Probiotic therapy can be said to be a magic microecological weapon against coronary disease.

Coronary heart disease (CHD)is caused by coronary atherosclerosis in the heart.  It’s one of the most common heart diseases , with over 7 million Americans suffering from it, and what’s worse is that, it’s the number one killer for women or men. More than half a million Americans are killed by a heart attack caused by coronary heart disease every year.

Most of this kind of death can be avoided, as coronary heart disease is associated with lifestyle . The common risk factors for coronary heart disease are high blood pressure , high cholesterol,or smoking, over-obesity, insufficient physical activity, and diabetes and stress——all are controllable. In general, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or smoking can increase the risk of suffering from this kind of disease several times . Thereby, a person with these three risk factors is 8 times more likely to suffer from this disease than anyone who has no risk factors. Over-obesity increases the probability of high cholesterol and high blood pressure, and increase the risk of a heart attack.

When a person’s blood contains high cholesterol levels. In blood circulation, cholesterol and fat make up the walls of arteries, narrowing them, slowing or even blocking blood flow. When the cholesterol content in the blood is high, it is more likely to accumulate on the arterial wall. This process begins in the childhood and adolescence of many people , and as we get older, the situation becomes more and more serious.

About cholesterol, we always see a lot of abbreviations, such as HDL(high density lipoprotein), LDL(low density lipoprotein) and HDL/LDL(the ratio of these two lipoprotein). It is a lot easier than it sounds. However, it is important to know that HDL is good cholesterol and LDL is bad cholesterol . Bad cholesterol can block your arteries, making them hard and narrow.

This is the crux of the problem. Once the artery loses its softness, blood pressure rises and the best blood and nutrients do not reach all parts of the body——muscles and hearts will harden.

Using probiotics is only recently recognized as a way to control cholesterol.  Although it has long been known that eating fermented yogurt and some common probiotics can lower cholesterol. But it was not until the last decade scientists began to do research.

In the study of cholesterol and probiotics ,scientists have found that when a large number of probiotics are used —— each dose contains more than 1 million living organisms——the cholesterol in the blood will be reduced. More importantly, they also found that the ratio of HDL and LDL would increase. The higher the content of HDL is , the higher the ratio of it is, compered with LDL.

Probiotics such as (LA) ,a kind of acidic lactic acid bacteria, contain 10 billion-100 billion organisms per dose, which can significantly lower serum cholesterol. Recently, other bacteria have also been observed, such as Lactobacillus roe (LR). Unlike some other species of probiotics, people can attain good effect of reducing cholesterol only with less LR.

If you want to lower cholesterol better, probiotics must be able to survive in the process of being absorbed in the intestines. Why is it? The reason is that when probiotics are eaten into the body, they enter the stomach, but if they cannot resist gastric acid, they will be destroyed by gastric acid. In fact, most probiotics are killed in this way. Then, surviving probiotics enter the intestines, where they will encounter another enemy, bile. Bile has many functions, one of which is sterilization. So , if probiotics can’t resist stomach acid or bile , they won’t survive the moment when they can play a beneficial role.

Don’t be afraid , man’s own function coincide with the survival of probiotics. In addition to getting cholesterol from food, the body produces its own cholesterol(which is why diet regulation doesn’t always work, and once it works, it works almost the best.)The body produces cholesterol, as well as many other things, one of which is bile.Bile is formed in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, secreted into the intestines to help digestion. One of the most important tasks of bile is to emulsify fat. After completing the task, the bile is absorbed back into the intestines and found a way back to the gallbladder, waiting for the next time to be used.

In the course of entering the gut, the bile will encounter two fates: it can continume its work(to help digest the fat),or be broken down by a process called “early decomposition”. It is not important how this is going to happen. It is important to supply the probiotics to regulate the gastrointestinal microecology, thereby accelerating the early decomposition of the bile. If the bile is broken dowm, it is likely to be excreted in vitro with other waste. Although there will be some repeated absorption, the amount is small.

If bile is excreted out of the body, it is clear that it will no longer be absorbed and circulated repeatedly to cause it to enter the gallblandder. The gallbladder needs to maintain a certain amount of bile. If the bile entering thee gallbladder decreases due to lack of circulation –as a result of probiotic activity in the intestines-then ,the liver will feel a decrease in bile content and automatically respond by secreting more bile.

In order to produce more bile, the body begins to mobilize its cholesterol reserves. Cholesterol will gradually be removed from the blood and enter the liver to produce bile. This effect is significant and measurable.

The above is the mechanism of probiotics to reduce cholesterol content in the body. It would be better to find a probiotics that can resist gastric acid and bile. It has been proved thet LR happens to be a substance with strong acid resistance and bile resistance. It can survive the journey into the intestines and stomach, where it will begin to suck away bile and break it down, eventually excreting it out of the body. It was observed that LR could reduce total cholesterol by 38%.

There is a “one -on-one” rule, which is said to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 2% for every 1% reduction in serum cholesterol. Remember, now we can lower cholesterol by 38%,that is to say, the use of LR probiotics can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by at least 76%,which is the point.

Scientists Mann and Sperry first discovered the effect of probiotics on cholesterol in Africa tribes. They found that African Marseilles drank a lot of dairy products fermented by Lactobacillus, and their serum cholesterol levels were generally lower. In 1977, they also found that American people who regularly drank yogurt also had lower levels of serum cholesterol. This is  has attracted the attention of nutrition, medicine, and microbiology field in the world , thus setting off the high tide of the study of cholesterol reduction by probiotics.

The metabolic research team at the University of Kentucky Medical Research Center conducted two studies on the daily intake of different content of probiotic yogurt and then testing the blood lipid changes in the crowd who have drunk. The first tudy was for yogurt containing probiotics, which showed a serum decrease of 2.4% for people who have drunk.

Swedish scientist think that, ingestion of probiotics can lower total cholesterol and LDL, thereby reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. In a 1998 study,30 persons tested were divided into two groups. The first group drank 200 ml juice a day, containing 50 million active Lactobacillus, that is, 1 billion probiotics per day, while the other group drank juice  without any probiotics. After 6 weeks, the the cholesterol level of the first group decreased significantly, and the serum fiibrin level also decreased significantly. In the other group, cholesterol and fibrin levels did not change.

Probiotic therapy not only lowers cholesterol, but also lowers blood pressure-another high risk factor for coronary heart disease. Many results show that eating certain products made by Lactobacillus or other metabolites in patients with hypertension can lower blood pressure and can be used as a tool for patients to control high blood pressure.

A 12-week random double-blind placebo-controlled clinical study at the Cardiovascular Center of Tokyo Medical Colllege, Japan, observed the changes of blood pressure in 39 middle-aged patients with hypertension (16 women and 23 men, aged between 28 and 81 years old )after drinking fermented milk drinks. The results showed that a single dose of lactic acid could significantly reduce blood pressure. Researchers at Xinzhou University in Japan also found some probiotics inhibit the reabsorption of cholesterol-carrying bile acids in liver and discharge cholesterol from the blood through faeces. They looked at a group of people aged 18 to 55 with high blood pressure for up to 8 weeks, and asked one of the group to supply a cetain dose of probiotics a day. The results showed that their blood pressure decreased significantly, while those in the cotrol group who did not take probiotics without any changes.

Some studies on fermented milk have also shown that probiotics produce a lot of antihypertensive substances when probiotics grow. When scientists isolated substances that had antihypertensive effects, they found that at least one situation was due to the role of beneficial bacterial cell walls, suggesting that even cell death could work.

It can be seen that probiotics play a considerable role in the treatment of coronary heart disease and its related diseases. We should make probiotics part of our diet.
